Commercial Pesticide Applicator License

Pesticide Applicator Certification is designed to demonstrate a certain level of competency by pesticide users on the safe use of pesticides. Users of pesticides are classified as either private applicators or commercial applicators.

How to obtain the Commercial Pesticide Applicator License

  • At least 18 years of age.
  • Two or more exams are required depending on what you want to apply for. (Core exam, category exams)
  • The applicant must attend a 4-hour basic pesticide training course.
  • Applicant must have 40 hours of OJT training with a minimum of number of pesticide applications in the desired category. *To submit 40 hours of OJT information, you must do so by submitting the Category Training Verification Form. Training Verification Form VPE-002


If you DO NOT HAVE the 40 hours of training. Currently, you can take training courses for categories 3A, 3B, 7A, 7B, and 8B, in lieu of the 40 hours of OJT training.


  • After having attended the courses and/or verified your OJT training you must register for pesticide exams.

Anyone interested in taking a pesticide exam must register through the PACER system at: https://pacer.rutgers.edu/ Proof of course(s) completion and other documentation, must be uploaded to the PACER system when registering for your exams.

Once you have passed the Core exam and the corresponding category exams you will be able to receive your Commercial Pesticide Applicator License.

How to maintain a Commercial Pesticide Applicator License

Commercial Pesticide Applicator Renewal
You will receive an
update of your License status at least once a year with your License Renewal Invoice. You will be able to pay for your license online using the Invoice you receive by clicking HERE
 

If you do not receive your Annual Invoice, you can look up you information to make an online payment. New Jersey-licensed pesticide applicators can access their Pesticide License Information electronically by going to the ‘DEP DataMiner Pesticides‘ web page.

Commercial Pesticide Applicator Recertification
Your license is valid for a minimum of 5 years.

In order to maintain valid Pesticide Applicator Certification in the state of New Jersey, you can to Recertificate in two ways:

  • Retake the exams during the fifth year.

Or

  • Earn recertification credits (CORE / CATEGORY).  Must be accumulated by the applicator within a five year period, by attending courses like those offered through our website, seminars and meetings approved by the Pesticide Control Program. 

The "Recertification Update Form" will tell you when your 5-year period is up for each area you are certified in, how many units you have accumulated, and how many more you need. You will receive an update on your recertification status once a year with your License Renewal Invoice



Commercial Pesticide Applicators

  1. To look up your credit history visit the NJDEP website: www.pcpnj.org
  2. Under the heading Recertification Courses, click on link labelled “Check Your Credit & Course History-Commercial”
  3. Enter Requested information (Full license number, D.O.B., and last four of Social Security Number)
  4. Click Submit
