Do I need Pesticide Classes?

Yes, to obtain your Pesticide License, you must complete a Basic Training Class and a class in the specific Category you are pursuing.

What is a Pesticide License?

A pesticide license is a permit that allows individuals or businesses to purchase and use pesticides legally. There are different types of pesticide licenses available, such as commercial applicator, private applicator, commercial operator, dealer, and business applicator. Each type of license has specific requirements and restrictions depending on the intended use of the pesticides.

Who needs to be Certified and Licensing to apply pesticides?

In New Jersey, All Pesticide Applicators (private or commercial) to be licensed and certified to use restricted or general use pesticides.

Perople licensed to apply pesticides only under the direct supervision of a Commercial Pesticide Applicator or Pesticide Applicator Business are called
Commercial Pesticide Operators. These persons are required to be licensed but not certified. Operators don't need to take or pass a certification exam such as that required of Applicators.

How do I maintain my Pesticide Applicator license?

Your license is valid for a minimum of 5 years. In order to maintain your Pesticide Applicator license, you must earn a minimum of 24 recertification credits within this 5-year period by attending continuing education courses. You will receive an update of your Recertification status at least once a year with your License Renewal Invoice. 

Do I need an Applicator Business License?

If you apply pesticides "for contract" in New Jersey, state law requires your company to obtain a Pesticide Applicator Business License. 

What category license do i need to treat ticks?

How and where you treat for Ticks, will determine what category license you will need.   


NJDEP Category 7A, (General and Household) - Treat inside a structure (homes, offices, schools, etc.) for the control of these pests. In addition, 7A is permissible to treat turf and ornamental areas for the control of ticks and to treat turf for the control of fleas.


NJDEP Category 3A (Ornamental) for the control of ticks in low-brush areas


NJDEP Category 3B (Turf) in turf areas. Category 3B (Turf) is also approved for the control of fleas in turf areas.


NJDEP Category 8A (General Public Health) is the preferred category for the control of ticks and fleas inside or outside a structure. 


What Courses do i need to take as a home inspector ?

Anyone in New Jersey can do a pest inspection without a license.  However, please remember that most mortgage lenders require an NPMA-33 form be submitted by a home inspector.  Only those Home Inspectors with a Commercial Pesticide Applicator License are permitted to complete the NPMA-33 form.  In order to become a Certified Commercial Pesticide Applicator in the state of New Jersey, you will need to attend our NJDEP accredited Basic Pesticide Training / CORE and Category 7B Termites & Other Wood Destroying Insects courses.  Afterward you will need to take the corresponding NJDEP exams for each course and successfully pass.
